5 Tattoo Spots That Usually Hurt the Least

3 min readBy Skin Reserve

Quick answer

In our experience, the spots that usually hurt the least are the outer forearm, the outer upper arm, the back and outer calf, the front and outer thigh, and the upper back around the shoulder blades. They have more muscle or padding and sit farther from bone. Pain is personal, though, so talk to your artist about placement, and eat and sleep well before your session.

Every tattoo hurts a little. But some spots are a lot easier to sit for than others, and if it's your first tattoo, placement can make a big difference.

Here are five spots that usually hurt the least, from the chair. This is our experience in the shop, not a medical ranking. Pain is personal, and your skin, your nerves, the design and how you're feeling that day all play a part.

1. Outer forearm

Why it's easier: plenty of muscle and skin, and not much bone close to the surface. In our experience, most people find it one of the easiest places to sit.

Good for: first tattoos. It's also easy for you to see while it heals.

2. Outer upper arm

Why it's easier: the outside of the upper arm is padded and sits away from bone.

Good for: work-friendly pieces. It's easy to show off, or to cover with a sleeve.

3. Calf

Why it's easier: the back and outer calf have plenty of muscle to cushion the work. In our experience, the shin side, right over the bone, is a different story.

Good for: bigger pieces, since there's lots of room.

4. Outer thigh

Why it's easier: the front and outer thigh are well padded. In our experience, the inner thigh is more sensitive.

Good for: large designs that need a big canvas.

5. Upper back

Why it's easier: in our experience, the upper back and shoulder blades are usually easier to sit for than the spine or the lower back.

Good for: big pieces and long sessions.

Padding over bone usually means an easier sit. Whatever spot you pick, eat a real meal first, sleep well the night before and talk to your artist about placement. See 5 Things to Do Before Your First Tattoo.
