5 Reasons Your Tattoo Faded Fast
Quick answer
The most common reasons a tattoo fades fast are sun exposure, picking or pulling flakes during the peel, soaking it in a pool, bath or hot tub before it's healed, letting it dry out so it cracks and scabs, and friction from shoes, waistbands and daily use. Keep a healing tattoo out of the sun, let flakes fall off on their own, stick to showers, keep it lightly moisturized or covered, and use SPF 30+ once it's healed. And if it looks cloudy in weeks two to four, that's usually the milk scab, not fading. Judge it after about six weeks.
Your tattoo looked amazing the day you got it. A few weeks or months later, it looks tired. Some fading over many years is normal, but a tattoo that fades fast usually has a cause, and most of them are preventable.
Here are five common reasons, and how to avoid each one. As always, your artist's aftercare sheet comes first.
1. Sun
What happens: UV light fades tattoo ink12. It's the biggest long-term fader, and a healing tattoo is especially sensitive to direct sunlight2.
How to prevent it: keep a healing tattoo out of the sun completely, with loose clothing or shade. Don't put sunscreen on it until it's healed2. After that, use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every time it's exposed1.
2. Picking the peel
What happens: around days four to fourteen the tattoo flakes and itches. Picking at it or pulling off flakes can cause irritation or infection2, and in our experience, pulling flakes before they're ready can take color with them and leave light spots.
How to prevent it: let flakes fall off on their own2. If it itches, pat it gently instead of scratching.
3. Soaking it too soon
What happens: pools, baths, hot tubs, lakes and the ocean soak a healing tattoo. Until it's fully healed, avoid putting it underwater2.
How to prevent it: stick to quick showers until the peel is completely done. For when the pool and beach open back up, see 5 Things to Schedule Around a New Tattoo.
4. Healing it too dry
What happens: skin that dries out tight can crack and scab, and in our experience heavy scabs can pull color as they come off.
How to prevent it: keep it lightly moisturized with a thin layer, or covered with a breathable film for the first days, following your artist's instructions3. If healed tattooed skin feels dry, a water-based lotion helps1.
5. Friction
What happens: hands, feet, waistbands and straps get rubbed all day. In our experience, those spots wear faster than placements that don't rub, during healing and over the years.
How to prevent it: loose clothing and open shoes while it heals, and plan for a touch-up on high-friction spots. See The 5 Hardest Places to Heal a Tattoo, Ranked.
Why tattoos fade, at a glance
| Reason | What happens | How to prevent it |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | UV light fades ink | Shade while healing, SPF 30+ once healed |
| Picking the peel | Patchy, light spots | Let flakes fall off on their own |
| Soaking too soon | Soft, soggy skin and infection risk | Showers only until healed |
| Healing too dry | Cracks and scabs that pull color | Thin layer of moisturizer, or covered |
| Friction | Worn, soft edges | Loose clothes, plan a touch-up |
Before you call it faded, check the calendar
A tattoo that looks cloudy, dull or milky in weeks two to four usually isn't faded. That's the milk scab, a thin layer of new skin over the ink that clears up as it settles. See 5 Things That Look Wrong While Your Tattoo Heals (But Aren't).
Judge your tattoo after about six weeks3. If it still looks patchy or light then, talk to your artist about a touch-up.
FAQ
Why did my tattoo fade so fast?
The most common reasons are sun exposure, picking or pulling flakes during the peel, soaking it before it healed, letting it dry out and scab, and friction from clothing, shoes or daily use. If it's only two to four weeks old, it may not be faded at all. That cloudy look is usually the milk scab.
Does the sun fade tattoos?
Yes. UV light fades tattoo ink. Keep a healing tattoo out of direct sun, and once it's healed, use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher whenever it's exposed.
Can I put sunscreen on a new tattoo?
Not until it's healed. Keep a healing tattoo covered or in the shade instead, then start using SPF 30+ once the peel is done and the skin has settled.
Why does my new tattoo look cloudy or faded?
In weeks two to four, a cloudy or milky look is usually the milk scab, a thin layer of new skin over the ink. It clears up as the skin settles. Judge the tattoo after about six weeks.
Does picking a peeling tattoo make it fade?
Picking can cause irritation or infection, and in our experience pulling flakes early can take color with them and leave light spots. Let flakes fall off on their own.
When should I get a touch-up for a faded tattoo?
After it's fully healed, around six weeks. If it still looks patchy or light then, talk to your artist.
